The best of traditions and modernity – Japan in 25 days

Stop 5 – Osaka, Japan. Visited 7-10th October 2024

From Kyoto, I rode the train to Osaka, only 60 km away, barely time to warm the seat.

Osaka is one of the largest cities in Japan, known for its fun, nightlife, and street food. Its most famous landmark is Osaka Castle. After catching my breath from almost 20 days in Japan, I headed first to see the castle. The moat looked deep and wide, and the walls looked impregnable. The castle appeared above the walls as if taunting any unwanted guests and flies to try. Today, a few gates at different parts of the castle opened to welcome visitors. Inside the gates, the castle stood tall, already multi-story, looking as if it was standing on its toes to reach even higher. Inside, it housed a museum. From the top floor, the moat looked like a river, and the foliage in the park below still looked exuberant but some was starting to turn golden and yellow. Facing the castle, the city’s modern buildings stood upright, proudly proclaiming its progress.

The shopping streets of Osaka can look very crowded. I joined the crowd on some of these streets –  Dotonbori Street, Ebishubashi Street, and Shinsaibashi-suji Street. Many of these shopping streets are covered, so nothing should deter you from indulging in shopping, rain, shine, or snow. I have a nobler and higher calling – to feel the heartbeat of the city and to please my palate with good things that I could chew over for a lasting memory.

Osaka, a fun city! Fortunately, I am not too old for some fun.
